Pilar paused for a long while. "He want me to know American girls." Kim flinched slightly. "I guess you know more than you want to about American girls." Pilar looked solemnly at Kim. "I am glad I came," she said. "Golkid, I meet you." The first basketball game of the season was Saturday afternoon. It was not against a boy's school as Carol Ann Martin had hoped. The team was Simmons, a girl's school in San Francisco. When Carol Ann and her friends could see that Mr. Prenzlow was not going to give into their demands, they decided to play for the team rather than go the entire season without playing. Kim was glad Mr. Prenzlow had called their bluff. Playing Simmons was competition enough for Kim. She and the other players knew Miss Fites was all pumped up for the game too. It had been rumored by Nancy O'Dell, a junior on the team whose cousin went to Simmons, that the Simmons' coach was giving basketball scholarships to attract players. The Athletic Association of the California Independent Schools forbade giving scholarships to players.
