Show basketball players to compete with boys teams. Specifically, they insisted that the Portsmouth boys basketball team be invited to compete with Miss Putnam's. Miss Fites had asked Mr. Prenzlow about the possibility earlier in the week, but Mr. Prenzlow had refused. 'Equality in opportunity does not mean equality in athletics', he said. Carol Ann and two other Seniors threatened to not play on the team unless their demands were met. So far, Mr. Prenzlow was firm against a boy's school coming to Miss Putnam's for anything but dances. At Miss Fites offer to be a substitute, an appreciative smile flickered across Pilar's face. Then, quickly, she dropped her head, as if embarrassed by all the special attention she was receiving. "Thanks, Miss Fites. You're great!" Kim said. All the way down the corridor of the gym, Kim exulted. Only one hour with the Mexican had paid off. Although she hadn't spoken, her face was warm and friendly. Obviously, she was no longer angry. Twice, from the corner of her eye, Kim saw Pilar following her like a grateful puppy with a new master. It would be only a matter of time before Pilar returned her stereo. Maybe not to her room. Maybe she would leave it in the lounge on the second floor. Regardless of where it showed up, Kim would be watching for it. Ill |
