Pilar stood, motionless, in the doorway. Growing impatient, Kim said, "Come on. Miss Fites is about to leave." But Pilar did not move. Finally, it became clear that the Mexican was not to be easily persuaded. Desperately, Kim took hold of her elbow, pulling her out into the hallway, then down the stairs and onto the playing field. All the way to the gym she talked to Pilar about team spirit and how wonderful Miss Fites was, and anything else she thought would soften the Mexican. When the two girls arrived at the P.E. office, Miss Fites was putting on her camel hair coat. "I understand you play better ball than I saw in tryouts," Miss Fites said. Pilar said nothing. "We could use your height on the team, but if you tense up when the heat's on, you won't do us much good." Kim patted the Mexican reassuringly on the back. "Pilar won't clutch. She just needs to warm up before you take a look at her. Come on, Pilar." Still pulling Pilar by the elbow, Kim went to the equipment room for a basketball.
