Show Spring Sports Tennis takes crown Tennis team brought home league crown, baseball almost brought back the trophy, but track left much desired. With the first signs of spring Utah's tennis, baseball, track, and golf teams began the reassembly of their little mechanisms for the obtaining of Western Division Trophies. The almost unfollowed and unheralded spring sports were widely separated in rating comparisons. Theron Parmelee's court squad stood at the head of division ranks from the first day of practice and held this position through the season. Led by standout Wayne Pierce, who was ranked 2nd in state amateur circles, and John Doige, returning court star, they went the season without a loss in conference play. They considered matches to be close if the opposing team gave trouble to only one of their teammates. Experience and finesse paid off as they blanked BYU 7-0 for the league crown. Golf was another bright spot on the Ute athletic horizon as the Redskin putters stroked their way to an improved record under Coach Ladell Andersen. Baseball held its own as the Utes climbed almost to the top of the league but failed to negotiate a tough Brigham Young squad which came out on top only after a playoff. For track, it was another lean year. Marv Hess moved in as new head coach of the cinder squad that retained only nine men from the '57 wars and only five of these had ever scored points for Utah during that whole season. Solidly it was a case of depth and power in tennis, a good overall golf squad, and a diamond nine with talent and experience which showed very well; but a weak cinder team that showed the effects of the lack of emphasis on this sport. A real job lies ahead for newly appointed athletic director Bud Jack and coach Marv Hess in the area of building a squad which will assume its proper role in contesting Brigham Young. :& v £- 4 ' * «? v-> f^. - „ ¦ .** . m:^m ¦ " ¦ |
