Show Extension Division's 1957-58 Artist and Lecture Series. Lovely mezzo-soprano, Nan Merriman, enchanted audiences with her musical intelligence and versatility. A protege of Toscanini, she won rave notices for her La Scala debut at the Mozart Bicentennial, at the Edinburg festival, and during American and European tours. Author of the official release on the atomic bomb, William Laurence appeared to speak in Orson Spencer Hall's auditorium in October 10. As the Pulitzer Prize-winning science reporter, he reports up-to-the-minute advances covered at major medical and science meetings. This year's joint appearance of the Utah Symphony and University Combined Choruses featured Handel's great oratorio, "Israel.in Egypt." A huge 350 voice chorus added to prominent soloists to form a moving performance directed by Utah's Maurice Abravanel in Salt Lake City's Tabernacle. The celebrated Roth Quartet returned to the 1957-58 season as a feature of the University's Chamber Music Festival. Composed of two violins, a viola, and a cello, the unique ensemble has participated in major festivals and concertized brilliantly for the past thirty years in both Europe and America. |
