Show Rose Kane Boy den Maw DEBATE COUNCIL Fulfilling the promise of past years, interest in debating activities on our campus has been steadily increasing. This year a fine representation of the student body competed for positions on the teams. Public service has been one of the supreme policies of the debating department for many years. An attempt has been made to educate the citizens of the state in problems of national and local concern. In the years when the state legislature meets, questions are debated on matters before that body and before the people of the state. This year while the question of the establishment of Junior Colleges was before the legislative body, the University debaters engaged in verba] encounters presenting both sides of the question in many outlying Utah communities. In this manner the debating department is fostering a constructive system of formulating an intelligent and enlightened public opinion. This is undoubtedly of great worth to the community as well as to each individual debater who receives personal development in his participation. His work must be clear, concise, and logical. He is trained in the systematic arrangement of his ideas. He receives intellectual stimulation from his encounters with opposing teams. The supervision of campus debating is under the direction of the debate council. Formulation of the departmental policies, approval of debate schedules, questions to be discussed, and the appointment of a debate manager arc among the major duties of the group.
