The matrons' section, under the direction of Mrs. Famie D. Hall, of Ferris, Cd., met for the discussion of those auestions that oertain to the home life of the Indian T~pi c .~'~'Tmhaetr on's duties." Mrs. L~lheM cCoy, matron at Chilocco Indian vhool, Oklahoma, presented a p p e r which proved of gmt interest to those engaged 1n the work. She mid: enter the work, and begging me, I shall briefly run over upon one occupying the matron's po~itiona, nd state in detail how those duties can best be performed. Let me first urge the wise matron to select from among her girls a few se eants, who shall be in command of small companies of girls. This will mntually%enefit matron and pupils. It stren hens character to be in a position of trust, and ser-geants will appreciate this angin most instances live up to what is expected of them. "The matron will also find it most convenient to have an undemtndy ready to take her lsce in case she may be ill or be called away from the school dwmg the year. " f)t is well to be up a little earlier than the girls. A smile and a word from you encourages them ar they go down from their dormitories. Then, too, it is frequently necessary to urge them to get up. Indeed, I often 6nd it best to wash faces to arouse some, and even after all have been dressed they are very much like the mice in the old adage and will play when the mother is not in evidence. " Haveasergeant onduty in thelavatory to see that no child goes to work until faee and hands have been bathed, hair combed, and all buttons fastened. This sergeant should see that girls go to their respective places indining mom and kitchen on time to help prepare the morning meal. Apropos, I usually haves copy of my detail posted in some conspicuous place in the play room. At this hour in the morning the matron should see that windows in all sleeping apartments are opened and bed-ding turned down to air while pupils are rtt breakfast. "Thegirlsaremarehed to thedinin roamundertheeyeof these eant, the matron directingall. I believe, when the brealfast is over, in bringing themTack to theassem-hly room and sending all up to make their beds. It is my policy to hold each child responsible for the appearance of her own bed. Of come I go up with them, help-ing one or showing another the best way to make the bed in question until all are made. I then turn over the dormitories to the care of a few girls who go to school in the morning, who sweep, ecrub, dust, and put the moms in general good order. "The matron never fo ets to see that the several detail8 report to their respective places of work on time. 7 send a sergeant around, both morning and afternoon, to the departments, ten minute after work begins, to find out if everyone is on duty an; to report absentees. The matron who has certain da s setapart for bathin and others for mefully wielding the fine comb is the one wgo orders her househoyd wisely. "The daily round of cares includes beautiking the rooms and halls as well as keeping them clean. If you have no reading room in your school, endeavor to estab-lish one as soon as ossible; write to your friends and to missionary societies you may know of; they wilfgladly send you many excellent thinga that will be thoroughly appreciated by your girls. |
