Show 1.0 Introduction 1.1 The main objective of this first level evaluation of the Family Mentor Program with the International Rescue Committee of Salt Lake City (IRC of SLC) is to gather feedback from current family mentor volunteers and IRC Staff in an effort to formulate constructive recommendations that can be implemented to improve current practices of the overall program. The data gathered will allow for the program to more fully meet the needs of family mentors, IRC Staff, and refugee families while facilitating the opportunity for IRC to utilize the value of this program according to their mission statement. 1.2 IRC of SLC is interested in developing the reciprocal relationship between community volunteers and refugees in order to provide healthy associations that will assist new arrivals in feeling comfortable while acclimating into their new environments. According to IRC - SLC's public fact sheet, "Salt lake is a successful location for refugees because of affordable housing, good employment opportunities, "anchors" to help with adjustment, and the welcoming nature of the community as a whole. Each year 700-800 refugees are resettled in Utah - a responsibility shared by IRC and one other resettlement agency." 1.3 IRC desires the communities surrounding these refugees to enjoy the benefits of these vibrant and diverse groups in comprehending the value that they can bring to the greater Salt Lake Metropolitan Area. The Family Mentor Program offers the opportunity to develop this reciprocal relationship. In August of 2006, there was an estimated 70 active family mentors however a year later at the present 2007, there is an estimated 25 active mentors. While the program needs some improvements and a push, it continues to be a valuable component in facilitating a partnership between the Salt Lake community and IRC to bring about successful acclimations for refugee arrivals. 5 of 5 |
