Show eastern rivers, including the Tennessee and Cum- berland Rivers. This is shown in accompanying table 4. Development of these water-power resources has proceeded somewhat faster in the Southeast, with 4,311,938 kilowatts developed, than in the Northeast, with 2,548,369 kilowatts. The dif- ference has been due to the Tennessee Valley Authority program which has been responsible for about 2,000,000 kilowatts of the developed hydroelectric power in the Southeast. The President, in his message to the Senate of February 9, 1950, called attention to the possi- bility of low-cost power for the Northeast through interconnection of the 2,000,000 kilowatts of un- developed base-load hydroelectric power in the Niagara and St. Lawrence Rivers with the 3,000,000 kilowatts of undeveloped peak-load hydroelectric power in New England streams. A total of approximately 25 billion kilowatt-hours a year of electrical energy is involved.
