Show TABLE II.-Summary of major deficiencies in basic economic data needed for river basin planning-Continued Item of deficiency Description of deficiency Need for the data Comment and recommendation B. Functional studies-Con, 12. Domestic and indus- trial water supply: a. Population______ b. Employment...... c. Income_________ d. Industrial activity. e. Building and other construction. f. Water usage. 13. Pollution abatement: a. General data______ b. Specific data on pol- lution. 14. Fish and wildlife...... See item A 1. See item A 2. See item A 3. By type of industry, i. e., manufactur- ing, trade, etc., and by specific in- dustry within each type, i. e., rayon manufacturing, coal mining, etc. Official data by types of buildings and other construction for counties, major urban centers and river basins for intercensus years. A major deficiency is the use of water (quantity and quality) by different types industry, commercial build- ing and residences. See also item B 4 above. The same as items 12a to 12f above. Data on sources of pollution, effects of pollution on economic values, costs, and estimated effects of pollution abatement have not been system- atically gathered for the country as a whole. Data similar to those discussed under B 3 above are needed on commercial fishing and trapping and on the commercial aspects of recreational hunting and fishing which require protection from adverse effects of river-basin development. See item A 1. See item A 2. See item A 3. To permit: (1) estimate of future of industries; (2) estimate of future water requirements. To predict future construction activity and resulting water usage. Adequate data on use of water under varying climatic and industrial situ- ations do not exist to forecast either future use of water or future ability of area to expand its industrial ac- tivities or even the population which it can support. See also B 4 above. See 12 above. Adequate planning of pollution con- trol in the interests of industrial de- velopment is impossible without comparable data for each river basin. See B 3 above. See item A 1. See item A 2. See item A 3. Census of manufacturing and of busi- ness made as frequently as possible with information on specific indus- tries by counties, major urban centers and river basins. Data might be gathered at time of each Census of Manufactures and for Census of Business. Data should be collected both from municipal water systems and from individual manufacturing and proc- essing concerns. To a considerable extent, this is already being done by the Public Health Service for quan- tity and quality of domestic water supplies, and this agency has facili- ties for extending their program. Supplementary information might be collected either in connection with existing census procedure or through special studies covering only this See also B 4 above. See 12 above. Collection of information should be put on a continuing basis under the Water Pollution Control Division of the Public Health Service. This activity has recently commenced. Data could be collected as suggested under B 3 above. 370 |
