Show may God preserve) has ordered and directe was mein! which registration and denouncement ant id a Fie ao | ae original grant. The grant contained over 40,000 acres. The Indians of San Juan claim that Captain Sebastian Martin gave them a piece of the land in the valley in payment for services in constructing the first great irrigation ditch on the east side of the Rio Grande. The documents in the Sebastian Martin Grant show that, in 1703, the original grantee, in company with others, registered a tract of land in what is now Rio Ar- riba county, the original petition being lost. It seems that Captain Martin, alone of those originally asking for the tract, cultivated or remained upon any part of it. He petitioned the Marqués de la Penuela, asking that the grant be made to him alone, as the others had forfeited any right which they might otherwise have had. There 1s no date to the petition, which is as follows: ‘‘Captain Sebastian Martin, resident of the jurisdiction of the Villa de Santa Cruz, appears before the greatness of your excelleney with profound submission, and in the most approved manner the law allows me, and states, that Whereas in the year 1703 Antonio Martin and myself reg- EP . pO Se F et were ta Leae ee = re . myo ae pee ane have broken up lands, opened a eS del Norte for irrigating the land, ie wlwletsts bE Re gee a from the Rio ditch te eee sided ae eee Ulliberi by virtue of a commission given Os Weel y ary hate ose by General Don Francisco Cuervo sea oe any without Pane quietly and peaceably ever: and myself, as well as five of ee eeneertn ions with four A ainst the en- omy ent?) and the orape hicanageeny rooms, and two si invasion, g ne ee Zisneros Antonio to ae cee a took place be— Te at royal aetensTee hp ee Lore nie ee — iar that time was Ce whereas, all the said on “deeds, and titles belonging to able said totract— Pans akeh a tas: lost and I have not been though I have diligently sought oo the laws would protect me 17 mayne tne in posistered them, session in good faith, in case I have not ye ae however justice intervening, your we Ue ae is wie te “ leased in view of what I have stolen oT rable land, of his Majesty, the said tract and @ stures th = oe ae cattle oie. peo i aces, pe = . ft a c wooo sossessionaswasby given to me, and to theJuan boundaryFé Lieutenant-General said 7. 7 ete pue blo of San who ran the line from the said proo f of a cross to be placed as Juan to where he ordered APP a's PP PLP where tote? ’ >. t by the sergeant major, Pepe Jeet ee ee ee ek Pie ee ee ee re oo aS + HOES 9-6 9 486 Pe sala ee 8 ae Ps at * i + aed prom- inent men of his day; the grant embraced the valley of the Rio Grande on both sides of the river from the boundary of the grant to the pueblo of San Juan on the south to the end of La Joya on the north and to the east as far as Las Trampas.
