Don José de Riafio y Tagle was a native of the kingdom of Castile, archbishopric of Burgos, mountains of Santander, in the Villa de Santillana. He was the son of Don Jacinto Riaho and Dona Teresa de Tagle Bustamante. His wife was Dofia Maria Roybal, daughter of Don Ignacio Roybal and Dofia Francisca Gomez Robledo. Of this marriage there was one son, José Riano. His place of residence was at ‘‘El Alamo,’’ in Santa Fe county. He also had a fine residence in the City of Santa Fe, on lower San Francisco street, which had a garden, orchard, and extended from the street to the river. Both of these places he purchased from Dofia Maria Fernandez de la Pedrera. Riafho was an intimate friend of Captain Juan José Lobato. The Juez Eclestastico and vicario Don Santiago Roybal was his brother-in-law, as was also Don Juan José Moreno.
