RAST Pit hse oe re Ss page 1, of leaf 3, it is stated that the pueblo of habitants, in order to support themselves, were compelled to farm lands on the Rio del Norte, at a distance of four leagues from the pueblo; that the Indians of San Felipe had usurped: some pieces of these lands without any authority or right and had sold them to three or four Spanish citizens; that the nullity of these sales was particularly fixed by a decision of the Royal Audiencia made public in the city of Guadalajara on April 19, 1817; that the member of the Audiencia who was responsible for the pro- tection of the Indians had requested, among other things, that the governor of New Mexico be directed to restore the lands in question to their rightful owners and to give a hearing to the persons who had bought them, with a view to providing other lands for them on the royal domate and entirely separated from the lands of the Inlans. This request was made March 26, 1818, and on the following day it was approved by the Audiencia. _ The governor of New Mexico was informed of this action May 20, 1818. Apparently no answer was received from him, and assuming that the communication sent to him had never been received, the present manuscript, containing all the proceedings in the archive up to that time, was prepared by the secretary of the Audiencia, Don Rafael Cuentas, January 14, 1819. 1364 LETTER April 14, from Ignacio Maria Sanchez Vergara, 1819, to Lieutenant-Colonel Facundo Mel- gares (either Governor or Acting Governor of New is a rough draft of the reply to it.
