At. noon the tw-o men, who had been left at Hungry crt:!ek to look for the horses came up~ but had not found them: and with them the two hunters, who were left at the place we dined yesterday, and had killed two deer. In the evening one of the large fish was caught, which we found t~ be a salmon-trout. Fridlly 20th. There was a fine morning; we caught ~i"x of the salmon-trout; and some hunters went out. About 9 o'clock one of them returned and had killed a brown bear. The 'M\lsquitoes and gnats are very troublesome. In the evening the othe•· hunters came ·nand had killed only ene deer. JOURNAL CHAP. XXII. · Saturday 2 lst. \V e had again a fine morning- , and we collected our horses in order to rclurn to the Com-mas fiat. We proceeded on to a creek, where we met two young Indians, who said they were com.c to go over the tnountains with us. \Ve halted here for dinner; after which, all our party proceeded 011 to Com. mas flat, except rny$elf and two men who remained Here to hunt. \Ve wish to kill as much meat as will sen·e the party, until we get back where our loading was left, as we have plenty of roots there to ser ve us over the mountains. One of our best horses g-ot snagged to day, and was left here. The two Indians ren1aine<l with us, und in the evening orte of the n1cn killecl a deer. Sunday 22nd. \Ve had a pleasant day. The two hun .. ters went out early and the Indians rcm~in e d with me at the camp. At noon the hunters came in, b 1t had killed nothing but one small pheasant.
