IIa\·ing breakfasted on colt, '\Ye m.oved on down the river 3 miles, and again took the mountains. In going up, one of the horses fell, and t•equired 8 ?r I 0 men to assist him in getting up again. \Ve continued our march to ~ o'clock when we halted at a spl'ing and dined on portable soup and a handful of parched corn. \Ve then proceeded on out· journey over the 1nountain to a high point, where, it being dark, we were obliged to encamp. 'I' here was here no water; but a bank of snow answered as a substitute ; and we supped upon soup. J\ionday 16th. Last night about 12 o'clock it began to snow. \Ve renewed our march early, though the morning was · very disag-reeable, and proceeded over the most terrible mountains I ever beheld. It continued snowing until 3 o'clock P. IVI. when we halted, took some more soup, and went on till we came to a small stream whet·e we encamped fm· the night. llere we killed anotht:r colt and supped on it. The snow fell so thick, and the day was so ddrk, that a person could not see to a distance of 200 yards. In the night and during the day the snow fell about 10 inches deep. Tuesdar~ l7ck. Our horses scattered so much Ia~t night, th~t they were not collected until noon, at which time we beg-an · our m arch again. 1 t was a fine day ,,·ith warm sunshine, " 'bich me!te<.I the sno\~ very fast on the south sides of the hi'lls, and made the travelling very fatiguing and uncomfortable. \Ve continued over high cksert mountains, where our hunters could find no game, nor signs of any except a bear's tract which they observed to day.- J\1 2 |
