Vve continued h ere to the 27th.-On the 24th there were ~om e showers; but during the remainder of the time th · ·e was clear weather. _?ur people were gener~1ly employed as before. 1 he hunters killed five more deer ; and the two men returned fron1 the Indian village, without finding any of the :natives. JOuRNAL. CII.4P. II. p,·id8y 27th. This forenoon we were engaged in loading the boats and preparing to start. At 12 we proceeded with a fair wind, and pleasant weather; went twelve miles, and encamped on a handsome prairie on the south side. S aturday, 28tlr.. We set out early; had a cloudy morning: passed some beau tiful hills and prail'ies, and a creek called Round-Knob Cl'eek, on the north side; and high bluffs on the south. \Ve encamped on the north side. llere two of our hunters came to us, accompanied by one of the Oto Indians. S unday, 29th. \iV e embarked eal'ly, and continued our '\'oyage. One of om· Frenchmen went with the Indian to bring n1ore of them to meet us at some convenient lantling place. At 12 one of om· hunters ~a me in with a deer ::tnd some elk meat. vVe renewed out• voyage at 3, passed a bank, where t here was a quantity of fallen timber, and encamped on the north side. M onday 30tk. Our grey hor·se died last ni~ht. \Vc set out early, and the hunters met us with a deer. At 9 we came to some timhe.r land at the foot of a high bluff and encamped t here in order to wait for the India~~· At the top of the bluff is a Ja\·ge handsome prairie, and a large pond, or small lake about two miles from catnp on the south side of the river. Two of out· hunters went out and killed an animal · called a prat·ow, about the size of a ground hog· an(i nearly of the same colour. It has a head similar to that of a dog, short legs and lal'ge claws on i ts fore feet; some of the claws are an inch and an half l ~>n fl' .
