Show THE MENS' GLEE CLUP Prof. Thomas Giles, Director AN organization of a Men's Glee Club composed entirely of trained ¦**• voices selected by competition was effected at the University of Utah this year. The club is composed of twenty-two voices, and is lead by Professor Thomas Giles, head of the music department. During the short time of its existence the club has succeeded in gaining a large repertoire ofpieces ranging from the mirth provoking pieces suggestive of a college glee club to the difficult and serious compositions of Bach, Lasso and Palestrina. The club appeared a number of times during the year at the regular assemblies. In conjunction with the Women's Glee Club the Men's Glee Club presented Massenet's opera, "Manon" at the Salt Lake Theatre in April, under the direction of Professor Thomas Giles and Mrs. Edna Evans Johnson. For roles in the opera the following students were selected: Manon, Jeanette Stoddard, Virginia Freeze; Le Chevalier des Grieux, Lester Rigby; Le Cont des Grieux, J. L. Woodward; Lescant, Scott Matheson; De Bretigney, T. A. Clawson, Jr.; Guilloit, Glen Watkins; Javotte, Elva Chipman; Pousette, Leah Rigby; Rossette, Margaret Wright; Voette, Ruth White; guards, Keate Cook and J. Beck. The entire cast played not only with skill, but with an understanding spirit and with keen personal pleasure in their work. I Page 101 |
