Show VNIVERSITY OF VTAH THE UNIVERSITY ORCHESTRA Prof. Thomas Giles, Director THROUGH the efforts of Professor Thomas Giles, head of the music department, the University of Utah now possesses a symphony orchestra of sixty-eight pieces, probably the largest university orchestra in the West. At the beginning of the year the orchestra consisted of but twenty-two pieces- a great contrast with the present size! The orchestra comprises a string section having twenty-two first violins, fourteen second violins, two violas, eight 'cellos and two double basses; a woodwind section consisting of two flutes, three clarinets, two oboes and two bassoons; a brass section composed of two French horns, three cornets and three trombones; instruments of percussion, a piano and an organ. Most of the players are of a professional grade. A grand concert was given by the orchestra at the Salt Lake Theatre in May, also a series of concerts at Ogden and in the southern part of the state. Each was a huge success. Undoubtedly the University Symphony Orchestra has achieved more success this year than in any former year of its history, and its director, Professor Giles, merits rich praise for his zealous and excellent work.
