Show VNIVERSITY OF VTAH STUDENT COURT IN order to have successful student body government a student court is necessary to enforce the rules and regulations on the campus. This fact was realized when the original student body constitution was drawn up. However, as all new institutions, the court was not very successful at first, but its efficiency increased until now we have a real, live, working court, which has the backing of the faculty and Student Body. The idea is to carry on the court as nearly like a trial court as is practicably possible. There are five judges who act as judges ruling on the law and as a jury in ruling on facts. The decisions of the court are binding, except in cases of expulsion, and there the court can only make recommendations to the Faculty. The Faculty in all cases acts as an appellate tribunal to which the defendant can appeal his case. Some of the most common cases tried have been stealing, cheating in examination, and underclassmen troubles. The only disadvantage with such a court is that new judges are elected each year, which necessitates that they spend some time in becoming efficient, and then leave. This difficulty can only be overcome by the students electing the best men possible to these positions. This year the court has been very successful and has established several good decisions as precedent for future courts. |
