Show 197 When she heard the galloping horses come to a halt and the men and barking dogs aproaching the door, she quickly sat herself down and picked up the pants to mend so as to create the illusion that the ordinary home routine was going on. The front.door was pushed in with such ferocity that it slammed against the wall and rattled the windows. "I told you they wouldn't be here...." Leonard spoke with assurance, but his voice trailed as his eyes fell upon Elise who was sitting in the chair calmly mending. "Search the place," Tomlinson ordered his men. He looked accusingly at Leonard. "Elise, what are you doing here?"asked Leonard. "I'm mending Benjamen's pants. What are you doing here?" "I I - " "Your scheme didn't work!" Tomlinson eyed both Elise and Tomlinson. The six hounds, held taut by the ruffians, were straining at their collars sniffing the contents of the rooms. One by one Tomlinson's band rejoined Tomlinson in the living room. "Maybe he did go to the docks like Leonard said," ventured one of the band. "Leonard said the Reverend went to the docks?" spoke Elise in astonishment. |
