Standing outside the door of Bishop Laud's rectory awaiting the portentous confrontation with the Bishop, Lathrop blinked his eyes and lifted his face to drink in the rays of the sun. When the door before him opened, Tomlinson motioned the guard to bring the prisoner forth. "Reverend John Lathrop!" Bishop Laud stood to meet his adversary;- "There was a time when you were one of England's most promising Anglican ministers." Lathrop remained stoic as the Bishop probed his loyalties. "Have you been in the Clink long enough to reconsider your Puritan ideology?" he looked intently in the eyes of the Reverend. Lathrop continued to give no response, facial or verbal, ' "Say the Oath of Supremacy and you'll go free!" came the challenge. |
