Show 41 "Interesting," mused Hyrum aloud. He wondered wherein a mere housemaid could have developed such an interest in Latin. Perhaps there was more to her than he had heretofore imagined. She looked like a housemaid-plain of manner and dress, but with an interest in Latin, she was of a genre he had not been sure even existed. What's more, it was for such a woman that he longed. Could it be possible that here in this woman of low station there was one who not only knew the virtues of good food, but treasured knowledge as well? It was a thought he had to dismiss immediately before it took hold of his brain and did some untold damage to his proprietous thoughts. A deafening silence pervaded. Elise hung her head in embarrassment waiting for the prayer to be offered. Benjamen unthinkingly sat down. "Not until yer mother is seated, Benjamen," was the gentle chide from his father. "Sorry, father." "He was thinkin about Elise studyin 'Latin,'" remarked Samuel who was beginning to suspect Elise's affection for Hyrum. Lathrop helped Hannah with-her chair after which everyone else was seated. Their heads all bowed in respect as Lathrop offered the prayer. |
