Everyone knew about Bishop Laud's list. And with the growth of Reverend Lathrop's congregation, Hannah's fears had grown proportionately although she knew it was wasted energy to restrain the Reverend too much when he was so intent on doing what he perceived as the will of God. For many months, Lathrop had been suffering under a discontent and frustration, not knowing exactly what he could or should do to further the work of freedom of religon. Then his friend bought a press. While waiting for Lathrop to return with the ^letter, Hyrum walked over to the bookcase and picked up what he perceived as a new addition to the Lathrop library. It was a bound book on Latin. He perused it, examining its pages and type. He loved books. "How does Bishop Laud find the Puritan ministers he wants to arrest?" Barbara's question penetrated the silence. "He's got spies, tha knaws! They keep 'im apprised!" Hyrum answered her directly. |
