Show CHAPTER FIVE "April 29, 1632"* "Knight to Bishop!" said Samuel as he took Joseph's chessman. Joseph gave him a disgruntled look and started a deeper concentration. "Speaking of knights, do you think Hyrum is one?" Samuel asked. "I don't reckon he'd want to be a knight--no, not Hyrum," Joseph answered but was uncertain of the motive which prompted Samuel's question. "You know what the law says...if a man makes better than 40 pounds a year, he has to be a knight or pay a big fine," Samuel egged on Joseph. "Hyrum doesn't like to pay fines, I know that." Joseph remembered when Hyrum told his father he'd rather go to the Anglican church than pay a resusancy fine. "So, what d'ya think...be a knight or pay a fine?" pressed Samuel. "Be a knight, I suppose," was Joseph's considered decision. The two boys continued their game of chess with Samuel wearing a smile. Barbara entered the room and sat down at the harpsichord--the most extravagant purchase Reverend "*Some researchers put the date of his arrest as April 22, 1632. |
