| Abstract |
In a series of three interviews, Sade Tannenbaum tells Joyce Kelen about her family background in Poland and her immigration to the United States at the age of five. She describes her childhood, various jobs she has held, Mormon attempts to convert her, and the differences between the two Jewish congregations in Salt Lake City. Other topics covered include farmily members, keeping kosher, Jewish communities in Kansas City and Denver, her service in the task of preparing the dead for burial, Shaary Tzedick, life in Salt Lake City, and Zionism. |

Show OHI Sade Tannenbaum 7-24-84 sl:22 the sisterhood, and that was it. And then gradually ~ ./ we had family service. Of course with the family service we always held a tea for membership. Now we don't have that any more. JK: So you carne and joined the sisterhood of Montefiore? ST: Yes, and I was on the board. In fact, I was, how long have you got here? JK: About ten minutes. ST: Did you know Clara Bernstein? She was president and I was vice. I know I conducted the meeting once when she was away. The two of us worked together and I've always been very active. Of course at that time, too, there were the older people who didn't want the young ones in, just like what's happening today. JK: You mean, they didn't want them in or they didn't want them to be active? ST: Well, they were active, the young ones were active because most of the older ones didn't have that experience. Some of them couldn't even read and write, so they could not hold office.-- I remember that there were a couple of women, let them rest in peace, I wanted to come into the kitchen to help, and one of them said, "No, she didn't keep kosher so she can't be in here." Which was ridiculous! you know when you think of it. |
