| Abstract |
In a series of three interviews, Sade Tannenbaum tells Joyce Kelen about her family background in Poland and her immigration to the United States at the age of five. She describes her childhood, various jobs she has held, Mormon attempts to convert her, and the differences between the two Jewish congregations in Salt Lake City. Other topics covered include farmily members, keeping kosher, Jewish communities in Kansas City and Denver, her service in the task of preparing the dead for burial, Shaary Tzedick, life in Salt Lake City, and Zionism. |

JK I can see -- Let me take you back a little bit to Denver. You mentioned that. Now, what year did your mother die? ST She died August-- No .... [thinks] August 1q22. That's 61 years ago. JK Oh, she died August 1922. So, now how old were you when she died. ST I must have been. When mother died. Imust have been about 18. JK Dcyou remember the impact of that. ST Bad. It was very sad. Because I remember. You know, the real Orthodox say don't mourn. And when I got a black dress, my father just thought i was terrible. So I had to get a black apron and I kept - for nine months- the year, in fact, very strict, very strict. Becuase from then on, I didn't any more. JK What do you mean you didn't any more? ST Well, I just kept the- I felt that I'd kept· the 30 days. I didn't go out any - dances, or whatever. But not as strict as mother. That was a terrible shock. JK You mean after- that was the first .. ST That was the first death in the family. And± was very hard on me. And then you see, after that, I - ah - I had quit my job. Well, when mother was sick, towards the end. And then I kept house for my father and two brothers. For three years. |
