In a series of three interviews, Sade Tannenbaum tells Joyce Kelen about her family background in Poland and her immigration to the United States at the age of five. She describes her childhood, various jobs she has held, Mormon attempts to convert her, and the differences between the two Jewish congregations in Salt Lake City. Other topics covered include farmily members, keeping kosher, Jewish communities in Kansas City and Denver, her service in the task of preparing the dead for burial, Shaary Tzedick, life in Salt Lake City, and Zionism. |

Show OHI Sade Tannenbaum 6-6-83 s2:40 was sort of an interpreter. She wanted cream for the woman. Her skin was dry. I didn't--We just had two creams. Ponds and some other. I know Ponds from way back. And I said, this would be fine. And then something else. And something came up. And she had to talk to her. And I was curious. I don't know Hebrew enough to realise it's Hebrew when I hear it. And I said, "where are you from." "Israel." And I said, "Areyou visiting here?" I don'tknow, are · all Israelis afraid of talking or commiting themselves to strangers. Haveyou had any experience? JK You know what I think -part of it is urn - Did you tell them you were Jewish. ST Well, wait a minute. So she says some more. And she says, "Israel." I said, "Oh. You speak Jewish. I'm Jewish." "Oh." Andtheir face lit up. But as much as their face lit up. They clammed up like this and they were scared. I said, "What ar eyou doing here. " They're on a trip. They \€nt to Yellowstone. They went all around then mother took sick. This young girl. And I think she was married. I don'tknow-- maybe not. And hermother took sick and she was in the hospital. I said,"Could I help or do something." No. Fine. And thenthey wanted something else. And I said, "well, this costs a little bit more than this." It's just my nature to do that becaiillse I don't know the circumstances-- "Money's no object'.' I sort of resented that, you know. And then the older person was talking to her.
