Show OHI Sade Tannenbaum 7-4-82 s1:7 JK What did you do for the Kansas Star? ST Advertising. Want Ads. JK did you j ust happen to fall into that. Into the newspaper world? ST It seems to me, I have a hazy recollection that I knew someone who did that work and it sort of appealed to me. And we'd have to solicit for want ads. And then they had prizes. If you -- there were ads that we took til further notice. Some ads were three days and some ads were a week. And we'd get so many points. And at the end of the month, we'd get cash bonuses. For that. So, of course, we all strived for that. And I needed thernoney. We needed the money badly. And I was there until we moved to Denver. And, of course, Denver, I made inquiries to work at theDenver Post becuase I had had experi-ence with The Star. And then there, I was in the want department. And then I had charge of -- all the phone want ads. And I had two or three collectors of money that I had to check in. We had assorted copy. Very intersting work. Didn't pay anuthing. But very interesting. Until Iwent to work for the Western Union. Be-cause I has asked the Denver Post for a raise and they said they couldn't afford it. And I took all the ads, and this happened to be a blind ad. And I knew who put the ad in. And I remember it was at Rosh Hashanah that I had an interview. Becuase I called and they said, "The ad isn't in yet, how do you know." And I told them. And he said, "Well, you come in and I will interview you." So when I went up there, he said, "You're not getting the job but you're one of the first." And it so happened I got the job. And they were outstanding. I was in the auditing department, then, for Western Union. |
