Matz (b. 1919) talks about his family background in Russia, the pogroms that took place there, his mother's immigration to the United States, his father's business, the Ku Klux Klan, and anti-Semitism in Magna, Utah. He also talks about the Greek unions, working for Kennecott during the Depression, school prayer, his lack of Jewish identity, and his father. He also touches on Hitler and World War II, life after the war, discrimination, and his years at Kennecott. 95 pages. |

Show OHI Sid Matz 11-25-85 s 3 : 32 to go over to Los Angeles on Passover. And ok . So he wrote me up a three day pass. And I went. To Passover. So , I went in there. We go in Los Angeles . It takes from S iscopal to Los Angeles in a bus , you know . And you get out there. Well, didn ' t go to Passover , we just wenton a three day furlough, you know , really had a time. I come back. Didn't even come back with the bus. I just hitched a ride back to San Gotthere and told them, real nice time and everything . So here comes the 24th of July . And so all mormon boys sign up for the 24th of July . So I wentup and signed my name . And this first sgt. said,"Now wait minute. You just wenton a three day pass on the Jewish holiday. "I said , "Loo kie I was born and raised in Utah. I celebrated the 24th all my life. Don ' t tell me I can ' t go on the 24th ."Andhe said , you can't. God damn it you can't be Mormon. I said, Idon't care . S owe had a chaplain at San ------- That was a Mormon Bishop. He was a major. M __ zzle I think his name was . I went over to him and I told him , "Look I'm Jewish, but I was raised- born and raised rightin Utah and I've been celebrating the 24th of July all my life.I've been to the primary. I've been to--" You know . sunday schol with the Mormons and everything.Andhe went right over tomy outfit and he got that first sgt. And said, "Hey, you give this boy a three day pass. He's going to Los Angeles and celebrate the 24th of July " Well, that sgt. was so god damn mad, he was boiling. So I went to the 24th of July.
