And this kid, this Coon kid, did something and- the guy , says , You Coon . ... Well. this Brown, you know , looked around and said , Come one, Coon so and so. And he was talking - this guy ' s name was Coon . We ad to explain it to this Black guy becaus- - that he was talking to this guy namedCoon. He wasn't referring to you as being a Coon or anything . Sothat ' s fine . So everybody was really - oh , watched themselves . They don ' t say any t hing derogai·ory or anything else around this Black guy. So this Ike Powell . Ike is an outspoken person. He ' ll say anything that comes to - whether there ' s women or anything. And this Black guy was working f or Ike . And he over-slept. In the lunchroom after lunch . And we were all s itting around there and Ike comes running in there and t his Brown was lying there on the bench , asleep . Ike ran to his feet and threw him off the bench. He said , "Look here , You Black s o and so " you know "You get your Black fanny out there and you go to work " Yes , sir . Yes , sir . He just loved this Ike. Why? Because Ike called it like it was . He didn't try to -- he was uncomfortable around the rest of us becuase we were always trying to - say the right thing. This Ike didn't give a damn. You Black so and so . Andhe loved it. So, youknow, it taught the rest of us a lesson. So when we got more Blacks in there, everybody was just act - natural . LK I understand what you're saying. SM You know, when you'retrying to apologize for everything you do or say , it's bad. |
