Matz (b. 1919) talks about his family background in Russia, the pogroms that took place there, his mother's immigration to the United States, his father's business, the Ku Klux Klan, and anti-Semitism in Magna, Utah. He also talks about the Greek unions, working for Kennecott during the Depression, school prayer, his lack of Jewish identity, and his father. He also touches on Hitler and World War II, life after the war, discrimination, and his years at Kennecott. 95 pages. |

This guy's a president of the CIO now-that wanted to ~hrough these people off the lill for trying to organize. LK What's his name. SI-1 His name was Mr. w ___ er, but I don't know, but he's dead now. But. LK He's dead. SM Yeah. In fact, this is something - you know, he was one of the - president of the union there, the electrician unions up there at Kennecott. LK KThey changed. SM OH, yes, it just completely changed over night. In fact, my Dad - got a lot of people jobs for Kennecott. You know, because he was a Mason and most of the Kennecott officials were big Masons and so all my Dad had to do was go p and say. Infact, epople would- a guy couldcome through to Magna and say where can I get a job at Kennecott. They'd say, go in to Sam Matz. He'll get you on. LK How would he do it. SM He'd just call this hiring boss and he'd put him on. And, he - he got a bt - a lot of people jobs over there. And Of course, they'd come and trade inthe store too.
