Matz (b. 1919) talks about his family background in Russia, the pogroms that took place there, his mother's immigration to the United States, his father's business, the Ku Klux Klan, and anti-Semitism in Magna, Utah. He also talks about the Greek unions, working for Kennecott during the Depression, school prayer, his lack of Jewish identity, and his father. He also touches on Hitler and World War II, life after the war, discrimination, and his years at Kennecott. 95 pages. |

Show OHI Sid Matz 11-25-85 sl: 14 -then they said, "What's your name? " I said, "Matz." That's not a Greek name. I said, "No, it's Jewish." And they were just like this? "Jewish? Toochhh .. " LK Really. [both chuckle] SM It was really funny. Anyway, they orne over and start talking to me. And I told them, you know I was raised with a bunch of Greeks. And they knew them all. Papanikolas. Paulos. You know , all the Greeks in Magna . Karakases and -- They were real friendly and nice, you know. And this was my life. I get out of the pool and here come these four people, all got big Stars of David. And they come by and I say , "Shalom." Oh , they look at me and just practically , ran , you know. And I think , I wonder if they think I'm an Arab or something, you know. But that ' s the way it ' s been. The Jews wouldn't have nothing to do with me. Bu t the Greeks and the Italians , always, you know. So I don ' t know . I think I look Jewish. What do you think? In fact ,you could be taken for a Greek. LK I have been. SM LK Yeah. SM So what's the difference. I bet you could get a bunch of Greeks and a bunch of Jews in the~me buidling an cyou wouldn ' t be able to tell which is which. LK That's true. I've been taken for Greek. I've had the same thing happen that happens to you. |
