Matz (b. 1919) talks about his family background in Russia, the pogroms that took place there, his mother's immigration to the United States, his father's business, the Ku Klux Klan, and anti-Semitism in Magna, Utah. He also talks about the Greek unions, working for Kennecott during the Depression, school prayer, his lack of Jewish identity, and his father. He also touches on Hitler and World War II, life after the war, discrimination, and his years at Kennecott. 95 pages. |

Show OHI Sid Matz 11-25-85 s2 : 17 Now, if you want t o , you know, just - I've a lways been that way all my life. So I'm not ashamed of being Jewish. I -I telleverybodyi'm Jewish. LK I understand. SM But, now this didn 't offend me with ARchie. Because I know Archie isn't Anti semetic or a n y thing like that. He's a little - a little Irishman. He was a good friend of my family. So I kind of-- his saying that d idn 't offend me-- LK Now, that would have off ended me. SM Well, now if somebody else had said it. It was - you can tell when someone is - what, anti semetic. You just feel it. I' -- I've been around at a party where somebody said a crack abo ut the Jews or something. And I said, "Now wait a minute."And I am Jewis-. Andthey apologize. "Well, we didn 't mean it that way. And this and that. LK But, you think this guy didn't mean it in any negative way. SM NO, I knew he didn't because this is Archie. The way he said it, it was , hey, it's o k. to be Jewish . Fine. Just don 't act like one .. you know. From his saying it, I can see what yo u mean, that it would feel -- but him saying it, there was none of LK There was none of that stuff ... SM WEll, I guess it's all according to who say s it. LK And it's all according to if you know the guy. SM Yea, thats true. LK That's probably what it comes down to. But, that wou1dbe hard for me to take. |
