ARTiCULO V. La linea divisoria entre las dos RepO.blicas comenzani. en cl golfo de Mexico, tres leguas fuera de tierra frentc a Ia desembocadma del Rio-Grande, llamado por otro nombrc Hio llravo del Norte, 6 del mas prof undo de sns brazos: si en Ia descmbocadura tuviere varios brazos corrcr{t por mitad de dicho rio, siguicndo el canal mas profunda dondc tonga mas de un canal, hasta el punta en que dicho rio corta cl li•1dcro merid ional de Nuevo-Mexico: continuara luego 3cia Occidente, por todo este Jindero meridional (que cone al Norte del pueblo llamado Paso) hasta Slt tGrmino por el !ado de Occidentc; dcsdc alii, subini Ia linea divisoria {tcia el Norte por el lindero occidental de Nuevo- Mexico, hasta donde este lindero estC cortado por cl primer brazo del rio Gila: (y si no esta cortado por ningun brazo del rio Gila, cnt6nces, hasta el punto del mismo lindero occidental mas cercano al tal brazo, y de alii en una linea recta al mismo brazo, continuara despues por mitad de este brazo;) y del rio Gila hasta su conflncncia con cl rio Colorado; y desdc la confluencia de ambos rios Ia llnea divisoria, cortando cl Colorado, seguinl el limite que separa Ia Alta de Ia Baja California hasta el mar Pacifico. Los linderos meridional y occidental de Nuevo- MCxico de que habht este articnlo, son los que se marcan en Ia carta titulada: "111apa de los E'stados- Unidos de lt!e:~.:ico, segun lo organizado '!J dif!,n·ido por las varias aetas del congreso de Jicha Repilbli.ca, y construido por las mejores autoridades; edicion 1·evisada que publicd en Nueva- York en 1847 .T. D·isturncll," de Ia cual se agrega un ejemplar al presente tratado, firmado y sellado por los plenipotcnciarios infrascritos. ARTiCLE V. 'rho boundary line between the two Repuhlics sha ll commence in the Gulf of Mexico, three leagues from land, opposite the rnouth of the Rio Grande, otherwise called Rio l3ravo del Norte, or opposite the mouth of" its deepest branch, if it should have more than one branch emptying directly into the sea; from thence up the middle of that river, following the deepest channel, where it has more than one, to the point where it strikes the southem boundary of New 1\'lexico; thence, westwardly, along the whole southern boundary of ~ew .Mexico (which runs north of the town called Paso) to its western termination; ~h~nce, northward, along the western line of New J\lexico, until It mtersects the first branch of the river Gila (or if it should not intersect any branch of that river, then to the point on the said line nearest to such branch, and thence in a direct line to the same); thence down the middle of the said branch and of the said ri,•er, until it empties into the Rio Colorado; thence, across the Rio Colorado, following the Jivision line between Upper and Lower California to the Pacific Ocean. 'l'he southern and westem limits of New l\fexico, mentioned in this article, are those laid down in the map entitled " }.lap of lite United Jt'le:t·icun States, a8 organized and dejinect by various acts of lite Congress of the said R epublic, aud constructed according to the best autlwrities.
