Show Editors' Notes Hinckley Journal of Politics' Mission Statement The Hinckley Journal of Politics strives to publish scholarly papers of exceptional caliber, promoting the intellectual talents and understanding of University of Utah students in the field of political science. Contributing articles should address pertinent issues by illuminating key problems and potential solutions, adhering to the highest standards of political research and analysis. The Journal seeks to cover issues ranging from local to international political concerns, embracing diverse political perspectives and a variety of analytical approaches. With this publication the Hinckley Institute hopes to encourage reader involvement in the intriguing world of politics. General Comments Working on the first edition of the Hinckley Journal of Politics has been a fascinating experience. We were given an opportunity to review many excellent papers from a broad array of topics. Many of these works were distinguished by the author's first-hand experience, excellent research skills and first-rate education. The selected articles represent a high standard of writing, analysis and research, which we hope sets a precedent that will be continued in future editions of the Journal. We would like to note that many papers considered, but not chosen, for this publication were of high quality; the selection of articles depended upon the context of the paper and the Journal. In addition to compiling articles of the highest caliber, much of this year's efforts were concentrated on establishing a distinct and professional style for the Journal. Format, style and design were chosen carefully with consideration given to the standards and procedures set by established political science journals such as the American Political Science Review. We recognize the potential for the Journal to grow and improve in future editions. It is our hope that future publications of the Journal will include more student papers. We would also like to be given the opportunity to publish faculty submissions. Most importantly, we wish to continue to cultivate close ties with our public officials so that we might publish their insightful essays in future editions of the Journal Acknowledgments The editors of the Hinckley Journal of Politics wish to thank: • The Hinckley family and the many supporters of and contributors to the Hinckley Institute. They have not only made the Journal possible, but also enriched the education, and therefore the research, of many of our student authors. • Ted Wilson, the Director of the Hinckley Institute. His vision and support have made the Journal a reality. • The Political Science Department, whose fine instruction manifests itself in several of our student submissions. • All students who submitted papers for publication, especially the published authors who endured the editing process with us. • Our Editorial Board members, for their help in reviewing and editing student submissions and the preliminary journal format. • The staff of the Hinckley Institute of Politics: Jayne Nelson, Pat Ryan and Martha Poelman for their invaluable input and support. • University Printing Services, for its hard work, patience and design expertise. • This year's contributing public officials: Attorney General Jan Graham, Senator Orrin Hatch and Governor Michael Leavitt, for their continued support of the Hinckley Institute and the University of Utah. • Our Faculty Advisor, Dalmas Nelson, for his days of work reviewing and editing the student papers herein. 2 |
