Stanley went to the furniture store in the morning and drank in the bars afterward. He played numbers, then ran them, then got caught. They busted people pretty good then because the Chief of Police ran the numbers racket and was a good friend of the Mayor, all Irish. The Irish ran everything, the crime and the law. They bent to Yankee money and busted the Poles and Dagos who were just doing Irish dirty work. That's just the way it went. Stanley spent six months in jail and when he got out he got his first son, Stan. Esther had three sons in three years and it was during that time that she and Stanley built the rabbit cages and the chicken coop, though Stanley preferred wild game and spent weekend after weekend with his friends xxxxxxx£xixxxixxxxxxxxxixxxxxxxsxxxax£ stxxk in the woods south of town, hunting rabbit and other small game, so Esther did much of the building herself. At first, she thought that's what made her miscarry the fourth child, but she miscarried the fifth too and the doctor advised her to stop having children for awhile. That got Stanley a little upset. He wanted more sons. He needed boys. He was buying out the old man who ran the furniture store, he and two other co-workers, and to make it go they'd need all the cheap labor they could get. He ran his hands through his thick black hair. "You want me hiring Dagos or niggers? They'll steal us blind" "Hire ? Poles," said Esther. "They'll want too much money." "You're too cheap to hire your own people." "A Pole cannot boss another Pole," said Stanley. "But he can boss his sons." "That's a different thing!" Stanley raised his hands in the air.
