Show Moon -120 The man's hands were large and his wrists hung out of his sleeves. Joy had seen him here other mornings, noticed him watching her. He was handsome in a heavy-featured way, with full lips held in a half-smile as if he were perpetually amused. He had collar-length hair slicked back straight from his forehead European style. He paid for his coffee, then turned and stared right at her and smiled. His eyes were as blue as the Bavarian lakes. He came directly to her table by the window where she sat every morning. She liked to watch the people on Charles Street, to fill herself with motion and color before taking the subway to class. He didn't ask, just sat down with her. The place wasn't even crowded, but she didn't mind, for she sometimes met interesting people this way. It was near the end of her senior year, and she was wondering what she would do next. The man set his coffee down across from her, shoved the table a little as he sat, so their cups jiggled and sloshed. "My name is Mark," he said. "I'm a psychologist." "So?" She didn't much like it when a person announced himself by his profession. "It might be important for you." He bore his blue eyes into her, insisting on being meaningful. She bent to her cup disliking his presumption, but then she felt a grudging admiration for his audacity. He was compelling and sexy in the manner of those German boys standing over their bicycles. "Do I threaten you?" Joy knew that when people said things like that, they were, in fact, hoping to threaten. She reached for her portfolio, thinking she ought to leave. He |
