Show 40 at other times when the plateau high pressure system is dominant, canyon winds prevail, up- canyon during the daytime and down- canyon at night. Near the Lake shore there is evidence of a minor land and sea breeze effect under conditions of weak pressure gradients. The prevailing wind direction at Salt Lake City is from the south- southeast, reflecting the controlling drainage wind from the Jordan Basin to the Lake. For Locomotive Springs, the two preferred winds are from the southeast, associated with the general pressure gradient winds, and from the north, associated with drainage wind conditions from the higher elevations to the north. Snowfall Snowfall, like most meteorological parameters, shows a strong topographic influence. The average annual snowfall over the flat areas of the Basin ranges from 7- 1/ 2 inches at Wendover to 63.6 inches at Farmington, Utah, at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains east of the Lake. Snowfall is generally greater to the south of the Lake. Annual snowfall at Brigham City, Utah, on the north is 48.2 inches with 72.8 inches for Tooele to the south. Snowfall over the lower elevations is light compared with the heavy falls recorded over the higher slopes of the Wasatch Mountains. Silver Lake at Brighton, Utah ( elevation 8,700 feet) averages 375.7 inches each year and the October- April seasonal average at Alta, Utah, is 453.2 inches, or over 37- 1/ 2 feet. | Evaporation Evaporation from small fresh- water sources within the Basin has been estimated to range from approximately 42 inches per year over the lower elevations to less than 32 inches per year over the higher elevations. |
