Show 6692 Sterling- D 4682 Q How far down stream did you go? A We went down to the junction, and below that to the head of cataract canyon. Q And then did you came back up the river? A Came back up the river. Q What kind of boat did you use? A Going down we used a gasoline engine driven boat that was about, as I remember it, thirty feet long, and about five feet wide in the middle ad two and a half feet deep. The engine drove a propeller, and the propeller, the lower part of it, under ordinary conditions, was about a foot and a half below the surface of the water. Q Do you know whose boat that was? A It belonged to Wilton Oppenheimer, who lived in Elgin; I employed him to take down there and back with that boat. Q Who else, if any one beside you and Oppenheimer, were in the party? A Nobody but Mr, Oppenheimer and myself. Q what was the purpose of the trip? A I had located a tentative dam site down below the junction of the Green and the Grand and I wanted to go down there to make a survey of the dam site, and also to examine the river with regard to its navigability in connection with hauling freight and heavy machinery down to this dam site; a power house was to be built. |
