Auto Racing In the 1940' s, auto racing enthusiasts discovered the Bonneville Salt Flats on the western shores of the Great Salt Lake. They found an expanse of barren ground on which virtually nothing grows and which, at certain times of the year, presents a driving surface unequalled anywhere else on earth. The Bonneville Speedway, as these Salt Flats have come to be known, has become the scene of repeated challenges on the land speed record. The Speedway has been the location of so many record- shattering performances that it has earned an international reputation as the " fastest place on earth." The Speedway provides opportunities for spectators to view these performances during " Speedweeks" each fall.
