Anterior teeth forming 5 series in the upper jaw, 4 in the lower. 10 gill-rakers on the lower part of anterior arch. Scales denticulated, except on the head, the lower parts of thorax and abdomen and anteriorly above the lateral line, 80-90 63-70 in a longitudinal series below the lateral line, 5 or 6 between last dorsal spine and lateral line, 3 or 4 between upper and lower lateral lines. Pectoral nearly § the length of head, ventral nearly -§. Caudal peduncle I5- I 3 as long as deep. Olivaceous, with numerous small dark violet spots on upper part of head and body and on the vertical fins; sometimes a dark stripe from snout through eye to extremity of operculum, continued as a series of blotches along the middle of the side ; a dark spot, sometimes ocellated, on the upper part of the base of caudal.
