Show 902 He used the steam boiler and the engine to propell the paddle wheel. R. 2136. " Q. What did you load on to the boats on your return journey up there? " A. What drilling machinery we had left; we had lost ninety feet of caning and rods; what we had left and all of the drilling machinery; we left a large cache of supplies and lumber from the decking of these boats, everything we could lighten them up by; and, of course, all of the bedding and tents. " Q. I don't now understand what your load was on that trip up the river." R. 2136. On the trip out, the " Betsy Ann" was loaded with machinery, and about six or eight hundred pounds of coal. The machinery would weigh about twenty- five hundred pounds, and there were three men in the boat. R. 2137. " Q. The Marguerite was there, too was it? " A. Yes, sir. " Q. Did you have the scows there, too? " A. We had taken the scows apart by removing the decking, giving us two separate scows; we had lightened them up with all of the heavy bracing we thought they could spare, to make them lighter; they were heavier built than the Betsy Ann, so we lightened then all we possibly could; we loaded provisions enough to get up to Wimmer's ranch and the bedding, tents and such stuff, and the reminder of our provisions and stuff we cached in a hut we built at the junction. " Q. How did you get these two scows up the river? |
