In 1804 and 1805 while he was there there were no other people, operating in the San Juan Canyon Since 1805 he has been back a number of times at all seasons of the year. On other occasions when he was back there he has seen other placer miners operating, but he has never seen any of them using boats. Since 1905 all of the supplies and machinery he has taken in he havied by freight wagons, or automobiles, overland. R. 2052. He operated the mine in 1804 and 1805, but he was down there other times to do other work, as his camp was wrecked twice; buried, and taken out by high water, and he was trying to rescue some of the machinery. R. 2054. " Q. What did the camp consist of, how many houses? " A. Consisted of one large house made out of rock and mud, you might say, like making the forms of concrete, with a very good corrugated roof on, a tight house; that was the general house -- general room, then attached to that was a large tool house. " Q. Were those on the bed of the stream, or up on the high line? " A. About six or seven feet above the flow of the water." R. 2054- 2055. He believes the camp was partly wrecked two or three years before the back flood of 1011; he was not there during the high water, but came in right afterwards. The first |
