Oh, I presume I left there about ten o'clock and arrived down at camp at sundown, and this was, I think -- just trying to remember what time of year it was -- I am inclined to think it was in July. " BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Q. Where did you build the raft? " A. Right at this Hoskinnini Indian camp, Cottonwoods, " BY MR. BLCKMAR: " Q. Did you ride on the raft? " A. Whenever it was open enough channel to ride; when it got stuck I had to get off and try to keep it in the main channel. " Q. Did you have a pole, or something of that kind? " A. No, I just used a rope, a long rope, about thirty- foot rope. " Q. What did you use the rope for? " A. In case it came to a shallow place, I would get out and try to pull it over to the deep part, and further down in the canyon, when it narrowed up, if the river was running head on, you might say, on rocks, I would get off and hold the rope ans teer around, and after the raft got clear of the rocks I would climb on again." He stated that at one time during, he believes, the summer of 1904, he had to go up stream, probably one hundred and fifty feet, and make a ditch to get the water of the San Juan River to the intake of the pump.
