Show 861 Stanton expedition. Mr. Hyslop made the trip overland from rapid No. 13, in Cataract Canyon, to Dandy Crossing, and returned with powder and drills, in less than a week. R. 2026. He didn't accompany Hyslop on this trip; nor did he go out of the canyon. He has no personal knowledge as to what Mr. Hyslop's course was. In addition to the wait caused while Mr. Hyslop was gone, and the loss of time at little and elsewhere, when the expedition paused to examine and prospect, they reached Lees Ferry, he believes the twenty- sixth of August. R. 2027. At the point where they had to portage their boats about half a mile, there were parallel reefs across the river. These reefs were sand rock in place, and were part of the rock formation of the bed of the river, with nothing unstable or shifting about them. Because of the heavy load and the hard work of hauling and handling, it was decided it would be simpler and easier to portage. R. 2028- 2029. There were breaks in the reef in places where there would be deeper channels ten or fifteen feet wide. But they had to pull the boats, and did some shoveling in the gravel and sand between the reefs. R 2029. It was only by pulling and hauling that they could get the boats through; would have to wade in the water. They kept the boats in the water by pulling then between the rocks. R. 2030- 2031. |
