Show 368 ELLEWORTH L. KOLE Re- called for Complaint ( R. Vol. 5 - pp. 955- 958.) Further Examination - ( R. Vol. 5. - pp. 955- 958.) BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Q. In either of your trips that you testified to yesterday and today did you have with you any map or chart or survey of the river? " A. We had the maps supplied by the Geological Survey. " Q. Just to identify those, do you know what maps those are, what years they were issued? " A. No, I can not say what year they were issued, R. 955- 956. The map used on the first trip in 1911 was from the records of the Powell survey and was not a complete contour survey, only an approximation and inaccurate in many places. A complete survey by the government was completed about 1931. R. 956- 957. BY MR. BLACKMAR: " Q. Mr. Kolb, would a map of Labyrinth or Stillwater Canyon help you wish avoiding the sand and the sand bars in the canyon? " A. We never used them in that respect; we used them only to locate our camps and prominent land marks which we expected to reach ahead of us, to get a knowledge of the country that was ahead, before we reached it, because we didn't know the country. " Q. So you never used maps for the purpose of operating the boats? |
