OCR Text 363 He is acquainted with Virgil Baldwin, the well- known boatman and pilot on the Colorado River. On this trip the large boat piloted by Baldwin was stuck possibly a half mile below the landing at Moab, Utah. R. 928. He then made a trip to the four corners with Mr. Hoyte and Mr. Mayer. Previous to this trip he had taken a trip from Lees Ferry, Arizona, to Needles, California, in 1923, in the capacity of boatman. This trip was taken in connection with a government survey. R. 929. Cross Examination - ( R. Vol. 5 - pp. 930- 952.) Immediately after the large boat got stuck about a half mile below Moab it backed up, drifted downstream, found another channel, and proceeded on up the river to Moab. The large boat was not stuck on this bar longer than it was stuck at other points on the river but he cannot remember just where. The boats landed at Moab about four o'clock in the afternoon, according to his best recollection, The trip was started from Shafer No. 1 well in the morning. According to his best recollection there were five or six men in the party when he made his first trip on the Green River with his father as a boy. He does not recall the length of the trip, but is positive they camped on the Green River more than one night. He recalls that a Mr. Jones and a Mr. Johnson were two members of the party. The boat used was a gasoline launch, twenty- four or twenty five feet long, with a seven foot beam. The trip was made, as he remembers, in the late summer and was the maiden trip of the
