Show 346 " A. Sand, gravel, rock, talus; the river bed was choked with boulders, quite large rooks, and it seemed impossible to run with any assurance of safety. " Around to the left, on the left shore, at first was a sandy beach, then a drift- strewn, boulders- strewn body of ground, the extent of which I don't remember, possibly one hundred yeard; below that we entered the water either on a gravel or sand beach." R. 888. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Q. Drag the boat? " A. Dragged the boat by man strength." R. 899. Numerous sand bars were encountered on some of the stretches of river above Clay Hill Crossing and at Clay Hill Crossing and although he did not operate the boat at Clay Hill Crossing he witnessed the boat in its transit from Clay Hill Crossing to Piute Farms. He saw the boat being worked out of the sand bars at different intervals but doesn't know the extent of the difficulties. In boating the rapids, provisions were taken through except on one occasion, when they were portaged around and the occasion when boats were portaged. R. 889- 890. On the last stretch of the river, many sand bars were struck. He saw no boats on the San Juan River except those operated by himself and party and he saw no placer miners on the stream.
