Show (t The Charm School HE University Dramatic Club presented its twenty-seventh annual play, "The Charm School" Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22, at the Salt Lake Theatre. This delightful comedy) was presented to crowded houses on both nights and at the Saturday matinee. Miss Ruth Candland was charming as Elise, the flippant and naughty boarding-school "flapper." Harry Nelson, as the dashing Austin Bevens who inherits a girls' boarding school and attempts to convert all its inmates into charming young women,, recalls pleasant memories of Wallace Reid's portrayal of the same role. Lynn Richards as the jovial George who insists on falling in love with the lovely Elsie despite her protests, is especially amusing. The other roles were ably filled by experienced players, most of whom have had at least two years' experience in dramatic work. Mr. Chauncey H. Hioustman, acting head of dramatic art at the university, may feel amply repaid for his efforts, since every role was smoothly enacted. The play was undisturbed by a single amateurish blunder, and was conceded by all to be a very creditable production. Three tours were made later. The first tour included northern Utah towns; the second, southern Utah territory and in the final trip performances were given at several towns in Southern Idaho. Back row: Eleanor Cowley, Marion Earl, Albert Eccles, DeWitt Paul. Center: Edna Mickleson, Donna Jones Jennis Ridges, Mildred Gerrard, Maurine Whorlton. Front: Harry Nelson, Ruth Candland Esther Coleman, Lynn Richards. Page 156 Digital Image © 2007 University of Utah. All rights reserved. |
