Show University Orchestra HE University Orchestra this year numbers seventy pieces. It is probably the largest standard symphony orchestra in the history of the University, including its personnel every instrument which is necessary for a complete symphonic organization. Professor Thomas Giles, head of the musical department, has been the director, and through his efforts the club has gained a fame which has become State-wide. The club consists of a string section of thirty-four violins, four violas, ten cellos, four basses; a woodwind section of two oboes, two bassons, two flutes, and two clarinets; and a brass section of four trumpets, three trombones, a tuba, and two French horns. The list of public appearances includes several student assemblies, the Lumbermen's Convention in the Hotel Utah in February, the inaugural, reception and banquet of President George Thomas, the Musical Society concert, and a concert in Ogden. The members also formed the back-ground and main support of the opera "Manon," which was presented in April. Page 166 Digital Image © 2007 University of Utah. All rights reserved. |
